According to the 2018 Cisco Annual Cybersecurity Report, out of the 93 percent of organizations that experienced a security alert, 44 percent were not even investigated by IT staff.
Of the 56 percent that were investigated, only 51 percent of the legitimate alerts were remediated, leaving almost half untouched and the organization vulnerable.
How can this be?
Controlling access to sensitive data is of the utmost concern for the worldโs most complex business and network environments. The amount of security-related data stored across a network is immense for many organizations. According to the Ponemon Institute, the average cost per compromised record is $141 USD.
These costs can be mitigated by performing security scans of your environment. The 2018 Cisco Annual Cybersecurity Report found that it takes a major event to motivate many organizations to patch critical vulnerabilitiesโeven knowledge of an active exploit is not enough to accelerate remediation. In the case of the WannaCry campaign, businesses had access to the patch for the Microsoft vulnerability for two months before the ransomware attacks occurred.
